ANNA PINKSTER
West Surrey College of Art and Design
BA (Hons) in Fine Art 1994
ANNA PINKSTER is well known for her figurative paintings of
indigenous tribes-people from around the world, in particular
India and Africa. Her works are characterised by a masterful
sense of colour and an attention to intricate detail. Her
figures are instantly recognisable as being part of their given
culture be it Masai warriors or Indian bathers at Varanasi.
Varying in technique from gestural to highly representational,
Pinkster sets her subjects within a defined locale or against a
plain colour ground. Depending on which setting, we are either
treated to a definite pictorial space or a more abstract
composition. Whichever way, the viewer is treated to a lasting
insight into the essence of a culture arrived at via the
artist's direct interaction with that culture.
