JO BARRETT is well known for her impeccably rendered photo-realist oil paintings. By focusing on still-lives and landscapes, she reworks a traditional subject matter into a very contemporary format.

Barrett's outsized works are derived from her own photography; that is, either fruit still-lives from the studio or rural landscapes taken from a moving vehicle. As a result her paintings maintain rudimentary photographic elements such as increased depth of field or implied movement resulting from using a slower than usual shutter-speed.

Barrett's painting method is unusual, in painting wet on wet to completion from one side of the canvas to the other. Her technique displays a virtuoso skill in handling and observation. Through these means we are forced to re-assess our notions of the ordinary and the commonplace as the artist beautifies the usual and the familiar with impeccable expertise.
