ZAVIER ELLIS works in the tradition of action painting. His work is both physical and expressive. Using mixed media on canvas or aluminium with a heavy reliance on DIY materials such as house paint, spray-can, varnish, wood-stain, plaster and cement, Ellis creates busy, textured surfaces. The work is process-based and reflects a concern with the reactions of these materials.

Ellis' paintings relate directly to the urban surfaces that we see around us such as brick, stone, peeling posters and graffiti and tags. Supported by subtle signifiers that may suggest a hint of a landscape or an actual piece of graffiti, we are presented with a coded range of abstract works that belie a certain sensitivity and sensuousness.
