SEAN FAIRMAN
DOB: 1965
Guildhall University
BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting 1996
SEAN FAIRMAN creates physically powerful works made from natural
and industrial materials such as earth, soil, sand, stone and
tar. Typically monumental in size and aura, Fairman combines
repeated application and removal with a physical process of
depiction and destruction in order to attain his complex
surfaces. They are aggressive and heavily worked; and express a
primitiveness manifested by various mark-making techniques.
Informed by a wide source of spiritual and literary learnings,
Fairman's work activates a variety of responses in the viewer,
from the visual to the physical to the metaphysical. Vying
between abstraction and narrative, Fairman's works display a
delicate balance between landscape, urban surfaces and
geological sub-strata.
