TOM HACKNEY creates impeccable
photorealist paintings. Investing wholly in the veracity of the
photographic image, Hackney recreates his images in oils with
explicit attention to detail.
The images depicted often withhold a subtle set of layered
meanings, very often arising from Hackney's constant questioning
and experimentation within the boundaries of the relationship
between photography and photorealism. He is interested in the
'rejuvenation' of the surface through the translation between
mediums, as well as the tension between fiction, myth and
reality: This is best illustrated in his renditions of
landscapes that have served as Hollywood locations, thus
shifting from real place to fictional film location to
photograph to painting.
