PETER JACOB MALTZ transforms
everyday domestic materials into monumental reliefs. Bathroom
items such as tiles, soap, broken mirrors and towelling are
combined to form dramatic compositions that literally break
through the surface, appearing as if physical form has burst
through from behind the pictorial plane. Maltz commonly refers
to Old Masters, on this occasion Michelangelo’s ‘Pieta’. In
transcribing from such works Maltz combines a sophisticated
compositional arrangement with a fragmented physical structure
that creates a dynamic, spectacular whole.
Japanese artist RIE NAKAJIMA builds uncanny sound installations
that explore the nature of sound, harmony and their relation to
the physical world and human memory. Complex floor and wall
based structures are built from base materials such as plastic,
paper, bin liners, tape and musical instruments. Each work lives
in space and time as structures and instruments correspond to
physical change, culminating in repeated events which combine to
create composite sound and material manifestations.
